Battery Electric Bus Systems

This module introduces the systems, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of battery electric buses (BEBs). Topics include high-voltage architecture and safety, battery and thermal-management systems, electric auxiliaries, regenerative braking, charging systems, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance. Simulation software is used throughout the module to reinforce key electrical and electronic control system concepts with an emphasis on practical technician skills for safely inspecting, diagnosing, and servicing BEBs.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the major electrical, mechanical, auxiliary, and control systems on a BEB.
  • Describe key differences between BEB and passenger-EV architecture.
  • Trace high-voltage power from the battery to traction and auxiliary loads.
  • Explain the function of contactors, MSDs, junction boxes, and DC-DC converters.
  • Describe safe isolation and lockout procedures for BEB service.
  • Explain how battery temperature affects performance, charging, and battery life.
  • Identify auxiliary systems for braking, steering, HVAC, doors, and accessibility.
  • Describe how regenerative braking works with the foundation-brake system.
  • Diagnose battery, thermal-management, low-voltage, propulsion, and auxiliary faults.
  • Perform preventive-maintenance inspections of major BEB systems.
  • Interpret diagnostic codes, live data, vehicle-health information, and telematics.
  • Explain how preventive maintenance supports availability and fleet reliability.
  • Verify that a serviced BEB is safe to return to operation.
